Rizzle Kicks - When I was a youngster.
1.0: Introduction
Rizzle Kicks are a duo double act, consisting of the members called Jordan "Rizzle" Stevens & Harley "Sylvester" Alexander-Sule. The genre that they categorize into is rap and old school hip hop.
2.0: Narrative
The narrative determines the story within a video or song. This means that there is a beginning (how or what the problem is), the intermission (how the problem is being resolved) and the ending (if the problem has been solved, and the result of the intermission).
The story behind this music video is that the two artists are reminiscing about their childhood, by thinking about their youth aspirations and how they enjoyed themselves when they were young.
The type of music video that this song categorizes into is a narrative based video, because they are telling a story of how they was when they was little, and all of the dreams they had.
This video would also fall into the category of a performance based music video because the artists in the video are performing in most of the camera shots.
3.0: Treatment (Concept)
The overall look and feel of the music video, Rizzle Kicks - When I was a youngster, is that it is optimistic and reminiscent because it makes the reader remember of their childhood.
The emotions portrayed within this video give the audience a sense of nostalgia, and allows them to feel enlightened about their childhood. It also shows the viewers an insight on how the artists were throughout their childhood, a where they are now in life.
4.0: Mise en scene
4.1: Clothes/make-up
For every music video, the clothes and make-up portrays the personality and type of character of the protagonist. With this song, the artists are dressed in different career uniforms, such as a fire fighter and an astronaut. This is because they are trying to show what aspirations they had throughout the video.
Also through the video, the artists change into cowboy/west Indian outfits, with their "young" characters. This depicts an image to the viewers of having fun, with wild imaginations and the amusement of having energy of kids.
4.2: Locations
There are many various locations selected in this music video which all play a part on the impressions it gives to the audience.
The first location that is shown in the video is a young boy in an astronaut's costume, thinking of going into outer space. This gives an impression to the viewers of children having a imagination that is out of this world.
The second location that has been selected in the music video is in an office. This shows that the characters have grown up by placing them in a mature, occupational setting.
Another main setting that they have presented themselves in is a playground. This straightaway gives the feeling of children playing, having fun, and where everybody spent their time childhood with their friends.
In addition to the locations for this music video, they are running around in a wide open field playing Cowboys and Indians. This gives a sense of fresh open space, and not being tied down to any responsibilities.
4.3: Props
The purpose of props in a music video helps to increase the strength of the message they are trying to perceive to the audience. The props may relate/co notates to the song topic/name and it may be used to help the protagonists express themselves.
In the music video for "When I was a youngster", there are many props used to help the artists convey their messages. One of the props they used was a birthday cake and candles. This is an important prop for the topic of this song because they are talking about age, and the stages of life in this song.
Another prop that has been used in the song is a slide. This is because it is a piece of equipment, which is used by children to enjoy themselves. They used this prop to relate to the topic of their childhood.
In addition to the props used in the music video, they also included the use of a cuddly tiger teddy. This gives the impression of being playing with toys, and it is a connotation of young children.
Also they show the use of a games console within the music video because that is also a connotation of a method of children's entertainment in the 21st century. So they used it to relate to modern target audience of children.
4.4: Lighting
The lighting used throughout this music video is of high accents and very light. This may be because they have used three-point lighting (key, back and filler) lighting to help accentuate all aspects in the camera scene.
Also, the use of lighting and the tint of the music video is very bright and quite fuzzy. This may be to give the effect of a dream-like, imagination feel to the video, as the artists are relating back to the past, when they were in their "glory days".
4.5: Actor movements/expressions
Throughout the song, the characters portrays a series of movements, body language and facial expressions which helps determine how they are feeling as they are expressing themselves.
The uses of expressions within this music video are very happy, energetic and lively. This is because they are referring back to how they were when they were children, and all of the fun they had.
The use of body languages towards each other and the "mini-me's" of the characters was inviting and amiable, which shows they were good friends, and they had spent a lot of time together, growing up.
5.0: Camera shot/types/movements
5.1: Framing or shot length
The framing or length of the shot for a camera consists of how much scenery the camera wants to include in the frame. This is so the camera can determine how much information they want to show to the audience.
One example of a frame shot in the music video is a close up shot. This was used at the start of the music video to show the face and expressions of the artist. A close up shot may have also been used at the start of the video to help the audience realise that the protagonist changes into a little boy in the first scene.
Another shot that was used in the music video was a establishing shot at 0.25 seconds. This shot is used so the background setiing can be seen in the scene, because it plays and conveys a significant message to the audience.
5.2: Camera angles
The purpose of different camera angles is to send and create emotions through the camera lens to the audience. This is created by positioning the camera in different perspectives to allow the viewer to experience the situation in different viewpoints.
One example of a camera angle used in the music video is a low angle long shot at 2.17. This shot has been used to give the effect that the characters are elevating aznd on a "high" by having fun. This angle has been shot in a long shot so the scene can be included in the frame.
5.3: Camera movement
The purpose of camera movement is to capture the action of a movie/story by moving the camera in various directions. The types of camera movements are, pans, tilts, tracking shots, hand-held shots, crane shots, zoom lenses and aerial shots.
one example of a camera movement that was used in this music video was a panned tracking shot from 0.18 to 0.24. This was used to follow the characters movements from one setting to another, and help the audience follow what is happening in the scene.
6.0: Historical, cultural and social context
The context for this music video is a social concept because it is about how two men have grown up for how they used to think, feel and dream about. To where they have ended up in life, given the social aspects that have affected them in life, (e.g. finacially, relationship wise, etc).
One stanza in the lyrics for this song mentions "Yo, wanted to be a fireman, Than I lost the desire man, The second I got old enough, To buy myself a cider can". This is a critical part of the song, because it refelects on many of the youths in the present day and age of how innocence is being lost, and how eveybody just cares about having fun, and not making something of themselves, or following their dreams.
