Feedback

group 1: Tanya and Sam's group

clear speaking and presenting. allowed the audience to contribute within the presentation. the body language has been appropriate and made the presentation interesting.

the presentation had all of the sufficient information and was bright and eye-catching colours.

the improvements that need to be made for their presentation is that they should have included more media elements, e.g. video and images to help realise and picture their production.

group 2: haris, kashif, munashe,

their presentation was interesting, as the explained the main physical features, e.g. cast crew. but their presentation lack media elements to help visualise the song, and there was missing information which didn't give enough information on their production.

they answered their feed back well, and explain the different aspects and purposed for their music video.

group 3: shuab, marian and

Their presentation was clear and understandable as they included the appropriate information and media to help visualise the music video. they also included all of the aspects and concepts to help see how their music video will be and what effect they will have.

treatment aspect for our music video

Meeting 6

the type of music video that we are going to plan and make is going to be a narrative based music video, but the stories within the song will not flow.

As the songs/protagonists change, the stories will change too. In some parts of the music video, the type will be more performance based as some parts don't have a story to explain.

The overall look and feel for our music video will be quite sad and depressed, as the songs that will be included are slow melodies, which talk about heart-ache. so our song will be placed in dark/cold weather, with bland clothing, e.g. white clothes, and it will contain slow and belittling frames and angles.

Locations decided

Meeting 5

For this meeting, we have been discussing and deciding locations that we will use in our music video. The location is a important aspect in a music video because it determines the scene to help portray a clearer message for the audience.

1st scene: Samsia Akhter

Song: "I need a doctor"

Location: Dark box/room, with a background of lots of clocks. We have decided this location/backdrop for my section of the song because it relates to the emotion i am trying to portray to the audience. Also it connects with the theme of my song of needing help, and being confined in a trapped space.

2nd scene: Mizbah Iqbal

Song: "Airplanes"

Location: city scape scenery in the evening. We have decided this location/backdrop for her section of the song because it relates to the lyrics in the song. Also, a cityscape scene is going to give the idea of modernism, with the theme of airplanes, and it will be a high cosmopolitian backdrop, to symbolize the sky and vehicles in the sky.

3rd scene: Ayesha Shaikh

Song: "Impossible"

Location: Sidney Stringer Academy rooftop. We have decided this location/backdrop for her section of the song because it relates to the lyrics in the song. "Shout it from the rooftops, write it on the sky line". Also, by using the rooftop garden, it gives the impression to the audience that the protagonist is despeate to get something off her mind, tell it to the world, and escape from her problems.

4th scene: Shalini Yogamoorthy

Song: "Written in the stars"

Location: Empty field in the evening, (looking at the stars). We have decided this location/backdrop for her section of the song because it relates to the theme of the song. we have chosen a empty field because it will highlight out the stars in the sky, away from interfering city lights.

5th scene: All

Song: "I'm coming home"

Location: Blue bridge outside Coventry transport museum. We have chosen to shoot our last song in this location because it is a long path/road, which is mentioned in the song. Also we have chosen to do this bridge, as it is a iconic piece of architecture for Coventry and as it says in the song "i'm coming home". we thought this would be relatable to all of us for home.

Mise-en-scene idea - pros and cons

In this post, I am going to be explaining the advantages and disadvantages that I must take into account when having to film my scene/idea within the music video

1.0: Clothes/make-upThe pros of filming and using the clothes and makeup ideas for my scenes within the music video is that it helps relate the theme and topic of the song with the lyrics.

For example, the lyrics "I need a doctor, to bring me back to life" shows that the scene and topic of the song is quite gloomy and ghostly. So taking into account the mise-en scene topic of clothes and makeup, i am able to make the meaning and relation of the visual content more appropriate to the song.

The cons of filming this idea for my scenes within the music video is that it is quite dull and may not catch the audience's interest as quick/strongly.

Also on the filming aspect, the disadvantage that may occur is that it may not come up clear and the effect we desird if the correct techniques and lighting is not used.

2.0: Locations

the pros of the choice of location for my scene in the music video is that there wont be many interferences, (e.g. weather, public, sound, etc.). this is a advantage as it means I wont be disrupted when acting/filming, which will save time and effort for permission.

The disadvantage of filming in a dark box/room is that it may be crowded and there may be a high risk of someone getting injured or tasks failing without a large space.

Another con that i would need to take into account of is the aspect of lighting and fitting in all of the equipment needed. I would also need permission from the person in charge is I am allowed to use the situated room and perhaps its facilities/equipment.

3.0: Props

The advantages of using the props within the music video is that it relates and ties in the topic of the song. the clocks will help represent and enhance the emotions and messages that will be protrayed within the scene.

The disadvantages that will occur when gathering the props for the filming/shooting of the scene is that it will be very expensive to get a large volume of clocks to fill up the room, and if we borrow the prop equipment it will need permission.

Also another disadvantage is that there are health and safety issues which need to be thought of when wishing to tuse these props within the music video because it requires sharp materials and technicians to place the props.

4.0: Lighting

The advantages on the lighting aspect when filming this idea for the music video is that we can easily expand/minimise the amount and type of light we wish to use as we will be in a enclosed area, where not natural light will be exposed to the camera. So we will be using our own type of back, key and filler lighting equipment to help achieve the finish we desire.

The disadvantages on the lighting aspect when filming the idea for my scene within the music video is that there is a risk of overheating and over-crowdedness because of so many different types of equipment within a small area.

5.0: Actors movements/expressions

The advantages of using these movements and expressions for my scene within the music video is that it will help portray the correct message and help enhance the overall emotions that are proposed to portray within the video.

The cons of using these expressions or movements within the music scene is that it may portray the wrong message or offend some people, based on the topic of death and "losing my mind".

Analysis of previous Media music videos

Homework : analysis of music video

1.0: Introduction

For this analysis, I am going to explain the media factors in a previous media student music video. I am going to analys the narrative, mise en scene, type of music video and

2.0: Narrative

The narrative for this music video is two boys rapping about their life, how they view it and the era/age that surrounds and influences them. They are talking bout the "streets", gangs and other aspects that relate to the urban background.

3.0: Mise en scene

3.1: Clothes/Make up

The clothes/make-up used within this music video relates to the genre and backdrop of the music video, which are sport branding clothing (tracksuits, joggers). These types of clothing are important to this genre as it dates back to when the urban street scene was first out. these types of clothing was worn by the artists.

3.2: Locations

The use of locations in this music video relates to the genre of the style of music again, because there are various different urban street sets. The use of cosmopolitian backdrops helps portray a stronger message of the genre to the audience, as the theme of urban hiphop is the "streets".

3.3: Lighting

The lighting used for this music video is quite gloomy and it is general lighting. That means that they used the light available in the scenery to give a impression of raw street vibe, and no fancy/professional equipment.

4.0: Type of music video

This type of music video is a preformance based music physically, because it shows the artists as the main protagonists. But this music video can also be classed as a narrative music video because it is a story about their life and the area in which the grew up.

5.0: Genre conventions

The genre for this music video is urban hiphop as it relates to the conventions of the streets. The audience can get this message and can recognise the genre from this music video with the use of street scenes, graffiti, underground backdrops, hoodies/tracksuits, rapping and the beats/intruments used in the song.

Mise-en-Scene for music video

Meeting no 3

For this meeting, we are going to discuss the mise-en-scene for our music video. The aspects in the mise-en-scene that I am going to discuss are, clothes/make-up, locations, props, lighting and actors movements/expressions.

For my scene/frame, the mise en scene elements will be noted in the sections below. The full mise en scene for our music video will be available on another post. My scene will be placed when the song comes up for "I need a doctor".

1.0: Clothes/make-up

The clothes to be used in my scene will be white, and floaty/draped. This is because my character is almost dying, and with the use of pale, waft-like clothing, this will give the viewers and impression of death and spirits.

The make-up used for my scene will be pale colours to symbolise that their is no life within me, and i am calling for help, to regain back to life. The colours of make-up used for my scene will be fair colours to match the message.

2.0: Locations
The location used for my frame will be in a dark box/room to give the impression that I am trapped, and I need help to escape. Also, the use of a dark room will give the impression that I am alone, and I am speaking up for sum help.
3.0: Props
The props that are going to be used within my scene in the music video will be clocks in the background. This is to relate to the lyrics "I'm running out of time". This is a important stanza in my part of the song because it shows that I am under pressure, and I don't have much time left to escape.
4.0: Lighting
The lighting used in my scene will be a key and filler light only. This is so the character in the frame will be highlighted from the darkness, and the filler light will help enhance the props used in the background. A back light will not be used in the scene because we want to make the surroundings as dim as possible to symbolize emptyness.
5.0: Actors movements/expressions.

The movements and expressions that I will act out within my music scene will be of pain, distraught, confusion, lost, loneliness and anxiety. These emotions will be portrayed to show the audience the feeling in the protagonist's mind, and to help expose the meaning of the song.

pre-analysis and idea (highlight) of my scene

Meeting No 2

Today, we are going to discuss what we are going to do in our scenes, and we are going to record and discuss the mise-en-scene for each of our frames.

Timeline of music video.

Full length of audio - 4.06

1st: Samsia Akhter - duration (0.35)
2nd: Mizbah Iqbal - duration (0.58)
3rd: Ayesha Shaikh - duration (1.33)
4th: Mizbah Iqbal - duration (1.55)
5th: Samsia Akhter - duration (2.10)
6th: Mizbah Iqbal - duration (2.16)
7th: Shalini Yogamoorthy - duration (3.10)
8th: All - duration (4.02)

Mise en scene for my part of the song.

Lyrics: I'm about to lose my mind you've been gone for so long I'm running out of time.
I need a doctor, call me a doctor, I need a doctor doctor to bring me back to life
Woah woah woah yeah
Cause I'm about to lose my mind you've been gone for so long I'm running out of time. I need a doctor, call me a doctor,

Brief outline of the frame idea:

As the lyrics say that "I need a doctor", I must act as if I am in pain, but I know I am not in physical pain because it says "I'm about to lose my mind". So, I must react as if I am mentally hurt.
the scene will be set in a a dark room or box, to signify the resemblance that i am confined in a trapped place all alone. Also, the lyrics say "I'm running out of time", so to help portray that message to the audience, I am going to add various different clocks to help represent the time.

I will act as if I am trapped and confined in a space, and I will act as if I am lost and mentally /emotionally hurt. On the second part of my frame, I will escape out of the box, and the camera will pan to Mizbah's scene as the song fades to her lyrics at that point.

I'm coming home I'm coming home tell the world that I'm coming home

I know my kingdom awaits and they've forgiven my mistakes
I'm coming home Im coming home Tell the world that I'm coming

Rizzle Kicks - When I was a youngster.

Rizzle Kicks - When I was a youngster.

1.0: Introduction

Rizzle Kicks are a duo double act, consisting of the members called Jordan "Rizzle" Stevens & Harley "Sylvester" Alexander-Sule. The genre that they categorize into is rap and old school hip hop.

2.0: Narrative

The narrative determines the story within a video or song. This means that there is a beginning (how or what the problem is), the intermission (how the problem is being resolved) and the ending (if the problem has been solved, and the result of the intermission).

The story behind this music video is that the two artists are reminiscing about their childhood, by thinking about their youth aspirations and how they enjoyed themselves when they were young.

The type of music video that this song categorizes into is a narrative based video, because they are telling a story of how they was when they was little, and all of the dreams they had.

This video would also fall into the category of a performance based music video because the artists in the video are performing in most of the camera shots.

3.0: Treatment (Concept)

The overall look and feel of the music video, Rizzle Kicks - When I was a youngster, is that it is optimistic and reminiscent because it makes the reader remember of their childhood.

The emotions portrayed within this video give the audience a sense of nostalgia, and allows them to feel enlightened about their childhood. It also shows the viewers an insight on how the artists were throughout their childhood, a where they are now in life.

4.0: Mise en scene

4.1: Clothes/make-up

For every music video, the clothes and make-up portrays the personality and type of character of the protagonist. With this song, the artists are dressed in different career uniforms, such as a fire fighter and an astronaut. This is because they are trying to show what aspirations they had throughout the video.

Also through the video, the artists change into cowboy/west Indian outfits, with their "young" characters. This depicts an image to the viewers of having fun, with wild imaginations and the amusement of having energy of kids.

4.2: Locations

There are many various locations selected in this music video which all play a part on the impressions it gives to the audience.

The first location that is shown in the video is a young boy in an astronaut's costume, thinking of going into outer space. This gives an impression to the viewers of children having a imagination that is out of this world.

The second location that has been selected in the music video is in an office. This shows that the characters have grown up by placing them in a mature, occupational setting.

Another main setting that they have presented themselves in is a playground. This straightaway gives the feeling of children playing, having fun, and where everybody spent their time childhood with their friends.

In addition to the locations for this music video, they are running around in a wide open field playing Cowboys and Indians. This gives a sense of fresh open space, and not being tied down to any responsibilities.

4.3: Props

The purpose of props in a music video helps to increase the strength of the message they are trying to perceive to the audience. The props may relate/co notates to the song topic/name and it may be used to help the protagonists express themselves.

In the music video for "When I was a youngster", there are many props used to help the artists convey their messages. One of the props they used was a birthday cake and candles. This is an important prop for the topic of this song because they are talking about age, and the stages of life in this song.

Another prop that has been used in the song is a slide. This is because it is a piece of equipment, which is used by children to enjoy themselves. They used this prop to relate to the topic of their childhood.

In addition to the props used in the music video, they also included the use of a cuddly tiger teddy. This gives the impression of being playing with toys, and it is a connotation of young children.

Also they show the use of a games console within the music video because that is also a connotation of a method of children's entertainment in the 21st century. So they used it to relate to modern target audience of children.

4.4: Lighting

The lighting used throughout this music video is of high accents and very light. This may be because they have used three-point lighting (key, back and filler) lighting to help accentuate all aspects in the camera scene.

Also, the use of lighting and the tint of the music video is very bright and quite fuzzy. This may be to give the effect of a dream-like, imagination feel to the video, as the artists are relating back to the past, when they were in their "glory days".

4.5: Actor movements/expressions

Throughout the song, the characters portrays a series of movements, body language and facial expressions which helps determine how they are feeling as they are expressing themselves.

The uses of expressions within this music video are very happy, energetic and lively. This is because they are referring back to how they were when they were children, and all of the fun they had.

The use of body languages towards each other and the "mini-me's" of the characters was inviting and amiable, which shows they were good friends, and they had spent a lot of time together, growing up.

5.0: Camera shot/types/movements

5.1: Framing or shot length

The framing or length of the shot for a camera consists of how much scenery the camera wants to include in the frame. This is so the camera can determine how much information they want to show to the audience.

One example of a frame shot in the music video is a close up shot. This was used at the start of the music video to show the face and expressions of the artist. A close up shot may have also been used at the start of the video to help the audience realise that the protagonist changes into a little boy in the first scene.

Another shot that was used in the music video was a establishing shot at 0.25 seconds. This shot is used so the background setiing can be seen in the scene, because it plays and conveys a significant message to the audience.

5.2: Camera angles

The purpose of different camera angles is to send and create emotions through the camera lens to the audience. This is created by positioning the camera in different perspectives to allow the viewer to experience the situation in different viewpoints.

One example of a camera angle used in the music video is a low angle long shot at 2.17. This shot has been used to give the effect that the characters are elevating aznd on a "high" by having fun. This angle has been shot in a long shot so the scene can be included in the frame.

5.3: Camera movement

The purpose of camera movement is to capture the action of a movie/story by moving the camera in various directions. The types of camera movements are, pans, tilts, tracking shots, hand-held shots, crane shots, zoom lenses and aerial shots.

one example of a camera movement that was used in this music video was a panned tracking shot from 0.18 to 0.24. This was used to follow the characters movements from one setting to another, and help the audience follow what is happening in the scene.

6.0: Historical, cultural and social context

The context for this music video is a social concept because it is about how two men have grown up for how they used to think, feel and dream about. To where they have ended up in life, given the social aspects that have affected them in life, (e.g. finacially, relationship wise, etc).

One stanza in the lyrics for this song mentions "Yo, wanted to be a fireman, Than I lost the desire man, The second I got old enough, To buy myself a cider can". This is a critical part of the song, because it refelects on many of the youths in the present day and age of how innocence is being lost, and how eveybody just cares about having fun, and not making something of themselves, or following their dreams.
